Module Learning Strategies
Learning will initially be lecture-room based, making use of web sites, specific work book and CD Roms
Learners will work together in small study groups to complete tasks and carry out research
Clinical practice for completion of case studies (20%)
The module will integrate theory and its application in practice. This will be achieved by the use of case studies.
Independent study to complete assignments (80%)
Module Indicative Content
This module will cover:
- A summary of the development of aromatherapy from ancient times to the present day
- Science of the oils - the chemical composition of the essential oils, therapeutic benefits and potential risks, a working knowledge of 25 essential -oils, an understanding of the importance of quality and purity in relation to oil production
- Vegetable oils - the function, production processes, quality control issues and therapeutic uses of 6 vegetable/carrier oils and the function, production processes, quality control issues and therapeutic uses of 4 herbal oils
- Botany - the basic structure and functions of plants and the characteristics of the botanical families/taxonomy of the essential oils
- Safety data - the importance of the safe use of essential oils
- Practical - providing a professional aromatherapy treatment tailored to suite the individual needs of a client
- Correct procedures for the application of aromatherapy - client care, blending and massage
Module Additional Assessment Details
Formative Assessment: Observation of practical application
Summative Assessment:
A series of 6 case studies totalling 36 hours - 6 clients x 6 treatments. A portfolio containing details of the treatment, reviews, client and therapist personal developments and evaluation of the treatment plan (70% weighting) (Learning Outcome 6)
Observation of treatment against a set of performance criteria (0% weighting - pass or fail) (Learning Outcome 6)
Essay - 1,500 words (30% weighting) (Learning Outcomes 1,2,3,4,5,7)
