Module Indicative Content
The biological, psychological and socio-economic domains of assessment and intervention in the treatment of addiction.
The domain of maximum therapeutic collaboration in holistic treatment of addictive conditions and how this interacts with a range of therapeutic theories and models, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Solution focused therapies, Motivational interviewing and integrative therapies.
Different types of evidence and research applicable to practice
The range of methods that can be used in health and social care research
Ethical issues in research and in accessing or using evidence
Reading, understanding and appraising research
Skills & resources to support critical appraisal including critical appraisal tools
Data quality and management.
Sociological theories and their application to practice in drug & alcohol services.
Psychological theories related to addictive behaviours and the barriers to behavioural change.
The development of public health policy, the `British Model' of addiction treatment.

Module Additional Assessment Details
An assignment:
Students will undertake a comparison of at least two different theoretical approaches to addiction (Contributes to Learning Outcomes 1 & 2).

A presentation:
A presentation demonstrating the application to practice of one construct of addiction discussing how it impacts on their work experience and highlighting any ethical issues they encounter (Contributes to Learning Outcomes 3 & 4).

Students must pass both elements of assessment.
