Module Learning Strategies
Independent study 70%, interactive lectures 15%, group activities, discussion and feedback 10%, formative work, feedback and tutorials 5%. Students will have concurrent clinical experience which will enable them to apply theory to practice.

Module Indicative Content
Clinical skills: universal precautions for infection control, monitoring of vital signs, blood glucose testing, limb perfusion, pain assessment, cooling and warming, first aid management of seizures, assessment and care of the unconscious, venepuncture, cannulation, IVIs, blood transfusions, bed bathing, eye care, mouth care, pressure area care, excretion, comfort and hygiene, last offices, peri-operative care. Cause, effect and care of carcinoma, shock, coagulopathy, hypertension, renal ,respiratory and cardiovascular diseases, endocrine disorders, anaemias, infectious diseases, autoimmune diseases, patient care. Appendicitis, cholelithiasis; effects on pregnancy and childbirth. Key skills: communication, numeracy, IT, working with others, learning, problem solving, employability, ethics and plagiarism.
Module Additional Assessment Details
A 2500 word essay that discusses a complication of childbearing and the issues relating to the woman and the multidisciplinary team (Learning outcomes 1-3)

Formative guidance on draft work will be provided by the module tutor.
Students will be formatively assessed in the skills laboratory, undertaking the practical skills listed in the module content.
