Module Special Admissions Requirements
This module is open only to students enrolled on the BA (Hons) Social Work and BA (Hons) Social Studies who have successfully completed level 1 of this award.
Module Learning Strategies
Whole group sessions - consisting of participatory lectures and presentations by visiting speakers in order to disseminate core knowledge and theoretical perspectives, including those arising from the experience of service users - 11 x 5hrs per week = 55 hours
Facilitated small group sessions - following a Problem Based Learning exercise on a case study - to include group exercises and discussion, reflection on practice in the light of knowledge and understanding acquired during the module, relating this to values and ethics - 5 x 2 hrs per week = 10hrs
Facilitated role play sessions taking place in (Forensic House Skills Lab) where small groups have an opportunity to practice interviewing and assessment skills. 5 hours
Directed study and independent learning - preparation for the group task including participation in small group sessions through guided reading, library / Internet research, contact with outside organisations - 235 hours.
Module Indicative Content
1. The historical and policy context of community care;
2. Models and theories of ageing, disability, mental health and multiple oppression, and their implications for practice;
3. Working with diversity in community care:-personal, cultural, religious and spiritual
4. The evidence base for work in community care, including:
- The impact of social factors on patterns of need and vulnerability;
- The impact of professional interventions;
- The concerns of service users;
5. Care management, including assessment and care planning;
6. Issues for carers, and carers assessments;
7. Multi-disciplinary working;
8. Rights, civil liberties and capacity for consent and decision-making;
9. Strategies for involving and empowering service users, including:
- Advocacy and self-advocacy;
- Involving service users in training and service planning;
- Supporting service users to manage Direct Payments;
- Supported decision-making.
10. Understanding and working with risk.
11. The abuse of vulnerable adults, and the social work role in adult protection.
Module Additional Assessment Details
A group assessment and care planning project based on a case study. 100%.
Each project will consist of:
a. A video of a simulated community care assessment visit based upon analysis of case materials. Learning outcomes - 3, 5 and 6
b. A set of completed community care assessment documentation. 1500 words. Learning outcomes - 1, 2, 3 and 6
c. A written rational for the proposed assessment and care plan. 1000 words. Learning outcomes 1 and 4
d. A group presentation to the assessment panel outlining the community care assessment process undertaken. (15 mins) Learning outcomes 1 - 6
Students must pass all elements of the assessment in order to pass the module. No compensation or condonation is allowed (except for students on BA (Hons) social Studies Award).
