The course is delivered by lectures (24 hours) accompanied by tutorials, laboratories and case studies (12 hours), some of which are computer based.

relationship between structure, properties and process route
classes of engineering materials - metals ceramics, glasses polymers and composites
mechanical properties - tensile properties, hardness, toughness, creep and fatigue behaviour
thermal properties - conductivity expansion and specific heat
fracture and failure of materials including corrosion
electrical properties - resistivity and dielectric properties
materials selection in the design process
material or merit indices
graphical and computerised techniques for selection
forces for change - environmental and scientific change
Module Additional Assessment Details
1 Laboratory report (40%) which will assess Learning Outcome 5.
A written report on case studies in material selection (60%) which will assess Learning Outcomes 1,2,3 and 4.
