Module Indicative Content
The purpose of this module is to provide students with an introduction to the study and transferable skills necessary for the satisfactory completion of a higher education business course and in employment and career development. In particular the module will focus on communication and I.T. skills relevant to Business. Personal Development Planning (reflection) will be introduced through this module.

Topics covered in the module will be drawn from: introduction to the University, independent learning, accessing on-line resources, use of Word, PowerPoint, Internet, and Outlook for HE and for Business, research skills and referencing, developing lines of argument and enquiry, critical thinking, written communication skills such as essays and Business reports, meeting and people skills used in Business, group motivation and behaviour, oral communications (presentations, body language) in Business, time and stress management, assignment and examination techniques.
Module Learning Strategies
The learning strategies will require students to commit 150 learning hours, of which 24 hours will consist of contact time. A combination of lectures and tutorial/workshops will provide students with the opportunity to develop a range of business skills. An Away Day will provide further opportunity (8 hours of contact time) to develop these skills.

A further 118 hours of independent study will require students to further develop and practise these skills using a combination of formative and summative assessment exercises independently and as part of a small group.
