Module Resources
Library, commercial, industrial and governmental statistical publications, scientific calculator.
RICS, Life Cycle costing; A Worked Example
Module Indicative Content
This module provides understanding of analytical techniques required to support further study in the other modules of the programme. It enables learners to analyse, apply, investigate and evaluate analytical techniques in construction related situations.
This module covers practical construction applications. For example:
You may be required to find the area of a development site and using this information produce a proposal development budget.
Whole life costing would be used to make evaluated and critical choices between materials and products that satisfy cost and design requirements.
Expected monetary value (EMV) could be used to produce an overall project outcome or to calculate rates for inclusion in a tender.
Network analysis is used to predict the duration of a project from its associated tasks and estimated durations.
Statistics and probability for quantifying aspects such as risk in a project.
Break-even analysis for selecting the best option.
Module Learning Strategies
12 x 2 hours workshop sessions
Core materials will be presented initially in workshops where students will have the
opportunity to gain confidence and experience through the practice of appropriate examples. Students will be expected to attempt problem solving in their independent study time.
Independent study and guided learning will support each session. You can expect to spend around 24 hours in preparation for the workshops. Self tuition through a Study Pack is expected to take approximately 42 hours and access to tutor and work-based guidance will take place. It is expected that in-house support will facilitate the learning environment and you could expect to spend about 40 hours on work-based learning. Additionally you can expect to utilise some web-based enquiry as part of your independent learning.
