Module Details
Module Indicative Content
The module will cover,
1. Introduction to the design, construction and application of various electromechanical musical instruments.
2. Exploration of the physical properties of these instruments and analyse acoustic and vibrational aspects inherent in their construction, usage and sound production.
3. Analysis of various instrument technologies with examples from electro acoustic families.
4. Introduction to the concept of pitch through the study of,
tonality(major and minor), pitch notation, scale construction, key signatures, modality and other scales, chromaticism and modulation.
5. Introduction to the concept of rhythm through the study of
rhythm notation, rests, time signatures, tempo, repetition and ostinato.
6. Introduction to the concept of harmony through the study of,
Intervals, addition of second parts(beginnings of harmony), transferable system of chord labelling, drones, discord, suspensions, chord sequences, cadences, blues and jazz sequences.
7. Development of skills in the use of a music software package in order to appreciate, understand and demonstrate your musical knowledge
Module Additional Assessment Details
1. Assignment - weighting 70%, consisting of a series of questions, assessing Learning Outcome 3. (1500 words maximum)
2. one hour on-line test - weighting 30%, assessing Learning Outcome 1 and 2.
