Module Indicative Content
This module explores the underlying concepts used in the design, construction and management of multimedia systems. Students will be exposed to a number of research areas reflecting the current state of multimedia research. Multimedia Technology - overview of current hardware devices e.g. sound, video, network cards.
Multimedia authoring - use and comparison of different authoring systems.
Lifecycle of a multimedia system - feasibility, cost effectiveness, timeliness, maintenance, upgrades, user choice, robustness, copyright issues, media production and problems.
Video conferencing - hardware, software, network considerations.
HCI of Multimedia systems - guidelines for usability.
Multimedia and Hypermedia design - structure, navigation, evaluation, collaborative and co-operative development of multimedia and hypermedia applications.
Multimedia databases, current trends in information retrieval of large image, video and sound databases.
Commercial applications such as banking, training and education, marketing, business applications and home entertainment.

Module Learning Strategies
Lectures, practical exercises, tutorials and software demonstrations will be used as appropriate to the material of the Course.
A formative assessment will be made on the students' ability to apply these tools and their knowledge to their own situation.
The assessment will assess the performance criteria and will consist of an assignment and an examination.
The assignment will typically consist of a report concerning the design of a multimedia application or application of multimedia to a particular situation.
1 hour lecture, 1 hour tutorial, 1 hour practical.
