Module Indicative Content
This module will give students the opportunity to think about themselves, their future options, and how to pursue those options. Students will start by exploring their skills, values and personality. This will form the basis for their career choices, and also for making effective job and, where appropriate, placement applications. They will research possible career options, by using various sources including the Careers Service website and the Internet - and then they will consider how their skills values and personality match up to what they want from work. Students will develop their job application skills by producing written applications and considering how to plan and prepare for a selection interview. Finally they will write a plan of action, explaining how they will make their career plans happen.
Module Learning Strategies
- Introduction to web-based materials
- Using Career Planning Module website to complete analyses of self, career options, vacancies, mock interview and career goals in preparation for assessment and to access on-line tutorials on careers related topics
- Accessing the Careers Service to use materials and talk to careers advisers
- Using computer aided guidance programmes, e.g. Prospect Planner, available on the intranet.
The learning strategy of this module requires students to commit to 150 learning hours. 3 x 1 hour lectures will introduce the subject area and use of Blackboard VLE (Virtual Learning Environment). In addition there will be the opportunity for students to arrange individual consultations to monitor progress in building the portfolio. Students will also be encouraged to visit Staffordshire University Careers Service to discuss their options with a Careers' Advisor and to access material in the Careers' library. The VLE will provide a comprehensive guide to the materials required for portfolio evidence. To develop and support underpinning knowledge, the VLE will also provide a range of materials to assist with the students self-directed study. The VLE will also provide the opportunity for the development of reflection and analysis in relations to the students career plan and progression.
