This module has 192 hours of whole class contact - typically eight hours per week over two semesters. Your class should normally contain a maximum of twenty students. In the class contact hours, you will be working with the tutor and your fellow students. Examples of the sort of activities you will be doing in the course are:

* Writing about various general themes
* Speaking in pairs, small groups and whole group discussions
* Listening to a variety of people talking in different situations
* Reading a range of texts on varied topics of interest
Module Additional Assessment Details
There are two parts to the assessment: (1) a language classtest at the end of semester one; (2) a language exam at the end of semester two.

1) A language class test, end of semester one (20% of marks - learning outcomes 1, 2)

This test consists of two parts, based on semester one work:

1) an 60 minute writing test

2) a 5 - 10 minute speaking test

This will enable your tutor to monitor your progress. S/he can check whether you have reached the required level of IELTS 5 - 5.5. If you have not yet reached that level, your tutor will give you advice on how to catch up during the next semester.

2) Language exam, end of semester two, (80% of marks - learning outcomes 1, 2)

This test consists of four parts (elements are equally weighted at 20% of the total marks for the module):

1) an hour-long writing test

2) a 5 - 10 minute speaking test

3) a 60 minute reading exam

4) a 45 minute listening exam

This end-of-course examination is designed to assess whether you have reached the level of English you need to study for a degree at a British university. Also, examinations are still an important part of assessment at university, so this exam gives you practice in exam technique skills. It will be based on themes you have studied during the two semesters.
Module Indicative Content
This module will help you to develop all four basic language skills - listening, speaking, reading and writing. This is an essential basis for your further study and for living and working in the UK.

In both semesters, you will be using a variety of materials, including a coursebook (or coursebooks) at an appropriate level and any other materials which your tutor thinks appropriate. For example, Move Intermediate might be used in the first semester and Move Upper Intermediate in the second.

You will be expected to reach IELTS 5 - 5.5 by the end of the first semester. By the end of the second semester, you must demonstrate that you have achieved IELTS 6 (the language requirement for most undergraduate study at Staffordshire University and its partners).
