Historical Background to Telecommunications Industry
- History of technical evolution of telecommunications
- Organisational evolution including General Post Office, privatisation, introduction of competition, digital telecommunications, mobile telecommunications (analogue and digital), internet, broadband.
Current Industry Structure and Organisational Roles
- The current organisational structure of the industry
- The role of organisations within the industry and how they interact (service providers, manufacturers, sellers, customers, clients etc.)
- The interaction between the organisations in the structure and those in other international systems
- Understanding the students' current and future role within the industry
Future of the industry
- How will the introduction of new technology impact on the telecommunications industry?
Regulations
- Telecommunications standards and their application
- Key regulations for telecommunications, where they apply and their impact
Module Learning Strategies
The learning for the module requires the learner to commit 150 learning hours. Of this there will be 36 hours of tutor support and 114 hours of self-directed study. Learning support material will be provided for the module. The module will draw on the following:
- Tutor-led sessions
- Group discussions
- Case studies
- Directed reading
- Use of work experiences related to learning
Module Resources
Learning support material will be provided for the module including access to VLE material. Appropriate texts will be available at each delivery centre through the library facilities. Limited copies of key texts may be provided by learners' employers.

Module Additional Assessment Details
Details :- A written assignment (1500 words) examining aspects of the current industry, the role of different organisations within the industry, likely future trends and their impact on the industry, the regulation of the industry including a focus on the student's employer organisation. (To assess learning outcomes 1 - 3)
