Module Details
Module Indicative Content
This module is intended to equip you with the study and critical skills that will enable you to gain the best learning experience from the course, whether in the studio or engaging in research for design studies or design history. You will be introduced to a range of historical and contemporary contextual issues, and to a variety of approaches to research, study and professional practice. There will be the opportunity for you to work as part of a team, using and developing interpersonal skills, and skills in time management and presentation. You will be introduced to a range of university research resources, including the library and information services (LIS), the slide library and the Design Study Collection. The module will include an introduction to the IT provision at the university and to resources and techniques from word processing to Email and the internet.
Module Learning Outcome
A An ability to successfully apply research skills, techniques and resources to the development and completion of a research topic within your study area. (Research)

B The ability to place an area of design into its appropriate contemporary and historical context. (Contextualisation)

Module Learning Strategies
As well as a spine of lectures that will introduce you to key issues in design via case studies appropriate to your area of study, you will experience a variety of approaches to learning including tutor-led seminars, workshops and tutor-led introductions to key learning resources. The module will be accompanied by a comprehensive study pack that will support the skills gained on this module throughout your degree study.

A written and illustrated portfolio of approximately 2,000 words appropriate to your area of study within Design and chosen from a provided list (100%)

To achieve a pass in this module you must complete the assessment task above, and demonstrate achievement of all the learning outcomes (A,B,C). you will have chosen a topic from the list provided in your module handbook, and have used and analysed appropriate source material. You will demonstrate the correct use of research skills and techniques provided by the module and the assignment will also be adequately presented in terms of academic conventions.

To achieve the highest grade in this module you must complete the assessment task above, and demonstrate achievement of all the learning outcomes (A,B,C). You will have used and analysed appropriate source material to a high level. You will demonstrate a mastery of the research skills and techniques provided by the module and the assignment will be well presented and conform to academic conventions.
