Module Indicative Content
This module provides you with an introduction to the generation of ideas in the context of visual problem solving. It deals with the practical issues of image making in the broad field of visual communication. You will learn to research and analyse communication problems and to develop methods of thinking which will allow you to produce innovative solutions. It will deal with the various stages of design methodology and their inter-relationship. This module will also provide an introduction to current methods of print production.

A CWK - A&D weighted at 100%.
Module Learning Strategies
Your learning will be achieved through project work, which will integrate practical and theoretical aspects of visual communication.
There will be seminars discussing aspects of visual communication, followed by group tutorials and
crits to present your ideas.
There will also be visits to various print houses to experience print production in a commercial context.
Normally 1.5 staff hours per student per 10 credit module
Module Additional Assessment Details
Evidence provided by the project work which you submit. This will comprise finished visuals, together
with notebooks and layout pads showing research and developmental work. This assessment will be
based on: Your knowledge and understanding of the generation of ideas in communication design. [B]
You must be able to analyse a design problem and produce a satisfactory solution that responds to the
requirements of the brief. [A, C]
Your solutions must be well produced and must demonstrate developing aesthetic judgement. [C)
A demonstration of your understanding of print production processes. [D]
To achieve a pass (Grade 4 or above) you must be able to analyse a design problem and apply a sound methodology to produce a solution that responds to the requirements of the brief and print production.
To achieve the highest grades (Grade 13 or above) your work should reveal a high level of understanding and thinking. You must show that you are able to develop ideas in an innovative and exciting way to achieve your communication objectives.
