Module Learning Outcome
1. An understanding of the key rules and principles of consumer law
2. An ability to analyse and apply rules and principles of consumer law to provide reasoned solutions to hypothetical problems.
3. An ability to understand consumer law in an advice work context.
4. An ability to use appropriate sources and research tools (principally electronic methods) to identify relevant and current consumer law.
5. Ability to communicate effectively in written form.
6. Ability to use word processing software.


Module Indicative Content
The module provides an introduction to the key rules and principles governing consumer law in England and Wales. It aims to build on legal knowledge already acquired to enable those taking the module to locate, understand and apply legal rules relevant to the consumer in an advice work context.

Topics to be included, in line with the CLS Quality Mark Standard for Generalist Help include:

- Contractual and tortious liability in the consumer context.
- Overview of consumer protection legislation
- Credit agreements
- Defective goods and services and refusal to supply goods and services
- Disability Discrimination Act 1995 in the consumer context
- Redress and enforcement of consumer law

Module Learning Strategies
Contact Hours on this module means your on-screen hours engaging with Lotus Learning Space activities for the main section of the module

Independent Study means on-line and off-line activity including work in the Media Centre, relevant background reading, and assessment preparation and completion.

Learning Space schedule

Online learning activities will be detailed via the Learning Space Schedule. Time-constrained learning activities will draw together key rules and principles and allow application of these in an advice work context. Formative assessment through the use of multiple choice tests in learning space assessment manager will allow progress to be self and tutor monitored.

Media centre materials

A key part of the learning strategy will be introducing the research skills necessary to locate and use relevant consumer law, this will include developing skills in ensuring currency of information. Media Centre materials will provide the key resources for skills development in this area.

Courseroom Discussions

As part of the learning activities outlined above students will be provided with structured tasks in their module study guide. The use of regular courseroom discussions to focus on key areas and enable interaction will be an important element of support of learning activities. Working both independently and collaboratively, students will prepare selected topics for discussion. The sessions will develop problem-answering skills in realistic consumer law scenarios.

Directed study and independent learning - The module study guide will provide details of small group sessions which will require extensive independent learning in order to consolidate and develop understanding of aspects of consumer law. Directed study and small group sessions are focused on providing the knowledge and skills that are assessed at the end of the module.

Total learning time = 80 hours

Development of Skills
Intellectual Skills will be developed by encouraging students to engage with the key issues of the module and in particular in the multiple choice tests which will enable student to measure their knowledge and understanding of the subject. These skills will be assessed in the assignment.
Problem Solving Skills will be developed as students seek to apply basic principles to the solutions of case study consumer law example, and will be assessed in the assignment.
Communication Skills will be developed through the course room learning activities, and written skills will be assessed in the assignment.
Team Working Skills will be developed in the collaborative learning exercises for course room discussion.
