Module Learning Strategies

Independent Study means on-line and off-line activity including work in the Media Centre, relevant background reading, and assessment preparation and completion.
Whole Group Session (6 hours)
During induction week, students will meet the tutor face to face for an introduction to the module and some skills training workshops
On Screen Activity (34 hours)
a) Students will engage with some key material to help them develop their knowledge and understanding of underlying theoretical concepts for good interviewing skills (20 hours)
b) There will be some formative assessment exercises to complete as the course progresses (4 hours)
c) Email and course room contact with module tutor (4 hours)
d) Supervision by agency supervisor (6 hours)
Independent Learning (40 hours)
Students will be expected
a) To read the core texts and other relevant material to help them develop their theoretical knowledge and understanding (32 hours)
b) To complete an analysis of the live interview conducted in their advice work agency (8 hours)
Development of Skills
Intellectual Skills will be developed through the student's engagement with on-line course material which will develop their knowledge and understanding of the theoretical concepts underpinning this module. These skills will be assessed in the assignment.
I.T Skills will be developed by using email and LLS.
Communication Skills will be developed orally in the skills workshop in induction week and in the student's workplace experience under the supervision of their supervisor. These skills will be assessed in the analysis of a live interview.
Written Skills will be developed and assessed though the assignment and analysis of the live interview.

Module Assessment
A ASSIGNMENT length 1000 WORDS weighted at 50%. A CRITICAL ANALYSIS length 1000 WORDS weighted at 50%.
Module Indicative Content
This module provides a theoretical and practice-based introduction to core interviewing skills which are essential to advice work. Particular topics will include:
- Aims, purposes and structure of an interview;
- Questioning and information gathering skills;
- Advising Skills;
- Telephone answering skills;
- Non verbal communication skills;
- Making effective contact with individuals and organisations for a range of objectives (SP/Social Work benchmark 3.2.3)
- Listening actively to others, engaging appropriately with the life experiences of enquirers, understanding accurately their viewpoint, and overcoming personal prejudices to respond appropriately to a range of situations (SP/SW bench mark 3.2.3)
Module Learning Outcome
Students will have developed relevant intellectual skills to be able to:-
1. Recognise, describe and discuss key theoretical concepts and underpinnings of interviewing skills.
2. Evaluate and analyse the effectiveness of their own interviewing skills
