Module Learning Strategies
These learning strategies will occupy your time:

160 hours total learning time, of which 18 hours will be class contact
(12x1 hour lectures and 6x 1 hour seminars)
142 hours will be allocated to independent learning.
In addition to the skills acquired in Level 1, you will be encouraged to
approach the subjects of this module from a conceptual angle, with
especial attention paid to theoretical historiographical issues. The
independent learning time will allow for individual or group study, but
also for general tutorial guidance on reading material and the preparation of class and assessed work. It will also incorporate individual tutorials focussed on the text chosen for the book report.
Module Additional Assessment Details
1 essay of 2500 words = 50%, which will demonstrate the ability to analyse the chosen topic conceptually, with an awareness of historiographical issues, and with appropriate reference to scholarly literature.

1 book report of 1500 words = 50%, which demonstrates an ability to analyse a particular theory of nationalism, in comparison with other theories, and with appropriate reference to scholarly literature
Module Learning Outcome
General Academic Learning Outcomes::
(1) a conceptual approach to historical study, and a greater ability to analyse key concepts such as nationalism.
(2) a greater awareness of historiographical issues, in particular the way in which conceptual interpretations of
historical events change over time.
(3) an ability to show how a particular conceptual approach illuminates the study of the past.
(4) an ability to research an historical topic in even greater depth, in particular through the use of scholarly periodical
literature or edited collections of articles.
(5) the ability to analyse and report on a theoretical study of a key concept such as nationalism.

Module Specific Learning Outcomes:
(1) a broad analytical understanding of 19th-century European history.
(2) an analytical understanding of the concepts of nation, nationality and nationalism.
(3) an ability to identify and analyse the different types of nationalism in Europe and their development in this period.
(4) an appreciation of the persistence of 'national histories' in the historiography of nationalism.
(5) an appreciation of the contribution made by nationalism to the conflicts of the 19th and 20th centuries.
(6) an understanding, through an in-depth, comparative examination of a theoretical study, of the range of possible
interpretations of nationalism.

Transferable Skills:
(1) an ability to think conceptually in analysing any problem or situation.
(2) an ability to identify relevant data and distinguish between the relative value of different points of view.
(3) an ability to express yourself conceptually, and elucidate complex concepts in written work

Module Assessment
A COURSEWORK -ESSAY length 2500 WORDS weighted at 50%. A COURSEWORK - SECOND ESSAY length 1500 WORDS weighted at 50%.
Module Indicative Content
This course provides a survey of European nationalism in the 19th century,
the formation of nation-states in this period, and the contribution
nationalism made to international conflict down to 1914. It will start
with a general consideration of nationalism, and will include such topics
as the revolutions of 1848-49, the 'unification' of Italy and Germany,
Balkan nationalism, the responses of multinational empires, in particular
Russia and Austria-Hungary, to nationalism, and the contribution of
European nationalism to the outbreak of the First World War.
