Module Indicative Content
This module focuses on the introduction of the concept of culture and intercultural communication and its implications on your own competence in this area. You will be encouraged to apply the knowledge and understanding of cultural difference and concepts of intercultural communication and to critically reflect on your own development in a variety of contexts.
Module Additional Assessment Details
An INDIVIDUAL PRESENTATION weighted at 40%. An ASSIGNMENT length 2000 WORDS weighted at 60%.
The assessment for this module is:
1) A 2000 word assignment which is based on your reflections on critical incidents to demonstrate your understanding of culture and intercultural communication. This should include a critical evaluation of the appropriateness and effectiveness of your intercultural communication. Weighted at 60% (LOs 1, 2)
2) An individual presentation (of 15 minutes maximum) to peers and lecturer(s) based on a cultural scenario of your own choice. Weighted at 40% (LOs 1, 3)
Module Learning Strategies
This module will be delivered through:
1. a series of 12 x 2 hour structured workshops which are delivered on a weekly basis. The workshops include a variety of teaching and learning methods, including presentations, large and small group discussions, case studies, role plays and cultural simulations. There is a strong emphasis on activity-focused learning and participation.
2. a number of experienced-based tasks and self-assessments to enhance your understanding of the complexity of intercultural communication.
3. independent study through which you are expected to build upon own learning from the taught sessions (e.g. reading key texts and possible social interactions).
